Sophocles was an ancient Greek tragedian who wrote several plays throughout his lifetime, but only a few remain today. Perhaps his most well-known works are the Three Theban Plays, better known as The Oedipus Cycle.

He was a contemporary to the great Greek lyric poet Pindar.
