Iocasta

Iocasta was the mother and wife of Oedipus. Previously she was the wife of Laius until a prophecy came from the oracle at Delphi foretelling that Oedipus will marry his mother. She gave baby Oedipus to a shepherd to leave him to die in the mountains; however, Oedipus was eventually adopted by Polybus and Merope. Following her realization of the prophecy, she begged Oedipus not to elicit any more information from a shepherd about his past, but Oedipus persisted. Consequently, she hanged herself in her bedroom in shame.
