Eteocles Polyneices

Eteocles with his brother Polyneices.

Eteocles was one of Oedipus's two sons and the younger brother of Polyneices. He ruled Thebes after Oedipus's exile, but he refused to relinquish his throne to his brother and ousted him. In response, Polyneices attacked Thebes with his army; due to a curse inflicted on the brothers by Oedipus, Eteocles dies along with his brother in the conflict. Eteocles's body is given an honorable funeral by his successor Creon, in contrast to his action towards Polyneices's body, which he neglected and dishonored.
